Özdemir Altan (1931, Konya – 2023) is a painter and academician who was one of the early pioneers of avant-garde thought and Pop Art in Turkish painting. During his secondary education, he attended painting classes by the painter Halit Doral at the Kayseri Community Center and worked on the preparation of the inventory records of the Kayseri Archaeology Museum.

He graduated from the painting department of the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts—today Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University—in 1956; he was a student first of Halil Dikmen, then of Zeki Faik İzer. In 1962, he entered the same school as an assistant and received all academic titles there, from Proficiency in Art to full professor. Following the retirement of Zeki Faik İzer, he took over the workshop professorship; until his retirement, he trained hundreds of artists.

He participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, most notably the Paris biennials of 1963–1965. When the concept of curation was not even named in Turkey, he practically performed this work with the Hüseyin Avni Lifij exhibition; he wove two 24 m² tapestries, which he began in 1968 and examples of which are located in the TRT Istanbul Radio House. With the «Accidental Encounter» method he developed between 1988–1992, he tried to demonstrate at an extreme point that artistic space is born from the synthesis of mutually independent logics, origins, and structures. He passed away in 2026.
