Ferruh Başağa was born in 1914 in the Karagümrük district of Istanbul. His family had migrated from Bosnia and Herzegovina to Istanbul in the late 19th century. After completing his primary education in Istanbul, he studied at a technical high school in Sarajevo between 1922 and 1935. In 1936, he entered the Painting Department of the Istanbul Academy of Fine Arts. He worked in the studios of instructors such as Nazmi Ziya Güran, Leopold Levy, and Zeki Kocamemi. He graduated in 1940 and then continued at the Advanced Painting Department, completing his education in 1947.
Starting his artistic life with a figurative approach in his early years, Başağa was among the founders of the "Yeniler Grubu" in the mid-1940s. He held his first solo exhibition in Istanbul in 1945, and his works were exhibited in an exhibition organized by UNESCO in Paris the following year. After 1947, he turned entirely to abstract painting. In 1949, he won first prize at the 10th State Painting and Sculpture Exhibition with his work titled "Aşk", becoming the first Turkish artist to be awarded for an abstract painting.
In the 1950s, together with Nuri İyem and Fethi Karakaş, he initiated independent studio sessions known as the "Tavanarası Ressamları". During the same period, he focused on mosaic and stained glass. He worked as a painting teacher between 1952 and 1954 and served at the Directorate General of Press and Publication for a period. Between 1971 and 1981, he worked as a lecturer at the Istanbul Academy of Fine Arts, establishing the stained glass and mosaic studios.
An abstract approach dominated his art from the 1950s onward. In the 1960s, he turned toward patch-like compositions; in the 1970s, he highlighted pigeon motifs to explore the theme of peace and freedom. From the 1980s onward, he concentrated on geometric abstractions, treating geometry not only as a technique but as an aesthetic quest. In the 1990s, he produced simpler and freer abstract compositions, thoroughly stripped of formal elements.
Throughout his artistic career, he held over 75 solo exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. His works entered many museums and private collections from Paris to New York, and from Munich to New Delhi. His large-scale panels and stained glass works that integrate with architecture are also among his important works.
Ferruh Başağa won the State Painting and Sculpture Exhibition First Prize in 1949, the Sedat Simavi Foundation Plastic Arts Award in 1985, and the Presidential Culture and Arts Grand Award in 2005. He defined his own style as "geometric painting." With his paintings built on line, light, and transparency, he became one of the pioneers of the abstract approach in Turkish painting.
He passed away in Istanbul on December 24, 2010, and was laid to rest in Aşiyan Cemetery.
