VOLKAN ÇOBAN

Painter Volkan Çoban's new solo exhibition "Benliğin Yansımaları", which investigates the ties between figurative abstraction and inner memory, is on view at Galeri Soyut Çankaya - Hall B between 03 - 15 April 2026.

The exhibition moves the artist's canvases beyond merely being visual planes, transforming them into "living surfaces" that harbor the traces of the past, cultural accumulation, and mythological connotations. Volkan Çoban carries the female figure in particular beyond a portrait, positioning her as a silent narrator and a space of memory.

A Bridge Between Tradition and Modernity

In the "Benliğin Yansımaları" series, the viewer is met by an emotional field of vibration where the dreamlike depth of blues and the dynamic energy of oranges meet. The artist embroiders symbolic stops such as fish, birds, ladders, and architectural forms onto the surface with the fragmented language of the subconscious. The works, in which traditional motifs are dissolved and reconstructed within a contemporary abstract language, build a strong visual bridge between locality and modernity.

The "closed eye" motif at the center of the exhibition symbolizes a withdrawal from the outside world and a way of "seeing" that turns entirely toward the inner universe. These compositions, where the boundary between figure and ground melts away, remind us that identity is not a fixed point, but a continuously transforming structure.

About Volkan Çoban

Entering the Erciyes University Faculty of Fine Arts Painting Department in 1998 and graduating successfully in 2001, Volkan Çoban has realized 6 solo and more than 20 group exhibitions throughout his art career. Having taken part in international exhibitions in countries such as Bulgaria, Canada, and Hungary, the artist's works are found in many domestic and foreign collections. Çoban continues his artistic work in his own studio.
