On the Works of Volkan ÇOBAN

Choosing a non-figurative style as a theme, our artist draws attention with his abstract works. Choosing to use the three instruments of painting—line, color, and form—freely, the artist's starting point is the return of painting to a spiritual essence stripped of narratives and the creation of compositions by stepping beyond foundational stories. According to him, the primary goal is to enable the human memory, which tries to make sense of every image it sees, to step outside the habitual and see this new universe through a different window. In this context, the circular form he uses in his paintings symbolizes the window opened to see this universe. Furthermore, the frequently used horizontal and vertical geometric forms are conceived to add rhythm and movement to the spirituality of this new universe. This newly constructed pictorial universe of his aims to transform the enchanting spiritual sincerity of music into a visual feast through colors and forms.

Abstract art can create an opportunity for the artist to convey their own memory beyond the visible more extensively. Indeed, ways of artistic production in a free space, without remaining strictly dependent on the visible, will thus be found. According to Volkan ÇOBAN, when we are surrounded by very different universes equipped with diverse forms, styles, and colors far beyond human faculties of seeing and perceiving, one must be able to step beyond the known. Exactly at this point, the primary duty falling upon the artist must be to challenge human perception and memory, opening the doors to a new, extraordinary perception, and while doing so, to use plastic elements freely. Our artist tries to convey the images he has accumulated in his visual memory from childhood to the present day to the viewer in an abstract language. His aim is to convey this different universe, where he experiences adventures within himself, to the viewer through a magical language. This universe had to be presented with the purely subjective language of painting, beyond known shapes and narratives. For this reason, the title of the exhibition has been «Benim Pencerem».
