DEMET KAYA

DEMET KAYA (1978), eserleri Galeri Soyut arşivinde yer alan sanatçılardandır. Galeri Soyut sitesinde sanatçının 75 eseri ve 15 sergisi kayıtlı (eserlerin tarih aralığı 2014–2022). Demet Kaya was born in Istanbul in 1978. She graduated from the Painting Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Marmara University in 2007. She continues her work in her studio in Istanbul.

Serge Daney says, "Every form is a face looking at me." The face of Demet Kaya Güngörür's sculpture also reveals its existence as a distinct form. These sculptures, where intellectual power merges with action, consist of faces looking at the artist during the carving stage of the stone. Although the artist appears to decide what her sculpture will look like, in reality, each stone manifests itself with a different face, and each face with a different form. The sculptor can reach the point she aims for as long as she does not disobey the stone. While the voids opened within the sculptures eliminate the massiveness of the stone, this heavy material seemingly gains an aesthetic lightness in the hands of the artist.

When approaching her sculpture works, the artist predominantly prefers Afyon, Kemalpaşa, and Marmara marbles. In addition to these, she uses colored and natural stones that are not extracted from a quarry but found in nature in an amorphous shape, with a hardness level slightly lower than marble. Examples of these include Serpentine found in the Hatay region, İğneada Sultan Green, İzmit Kandıra, and Onyx, which can be sourced from many regions. Her choice in application is determined in line with the artist's narrative concerns. Marble is mostly preferred in large-scale applications for its ability to provide large masses, its visual power, and its capacity to withstand outdoor conditions for very long periods.
