Abidin Dino, born in Istanbul on March 23, 1913, became one of the leading figures of Turkish modern art as a multifaceted artist. Dino's interest in art began at a young age thanks to his family. He spent his childhood in Geneva and Paris; he began his high school education at Robert College in Istanbul, but left school to pursue his passion for painting and writing. At a young age, he drew attention by illustrating Nâzım Hikmet's poetry books, and in 1933, he co-founded the "Group D" with innovative young painters and participated in numerous exhibitions.

Dino's artistic journey was not limited to painting; it also manifested in different branches of art such as filmmaking, sculpture, caricature, and ceramics. In the mid-1930s, upon the invitation of Soviet director Sergei Yutkevich, he went to Leningrad and worked in the field of cinema. After working as a film director in Moscow, Kiev, and Odessa during this period, he moved to Paris, where he met famous artists of the era such as Gertrude Stein, Tristan Tzara, and Pablo Picasso.

After returning to Istanbul, he participated in the famous "Port Exhibition," which focused on the city's dockworkers and fishermen, and designed the Turkish Pavilion for the 1939 New York World's Fair. In the 1940s, while Dino addressed the effects of war and political pressure in his works, he drew attention particularly with his drawings regarding social issues and the life of the working class. In 1941, influenced also by his politically themed works, he was exiled from Istanbul to Southeastern Anatolia; this period became one of the peaks of his artistic productivity.

Settling in Paris in the 1950s, Dino maintained his strong ties with art and literature circles there as well. The Paris years were a period when Dino contributed to the international recognition of Turkish contemporary art. During this process, the artist worked in Max Ernst's studio and had the chance to produce art at the same table as Picasso. Throughout his stay in Paris, he participated in prestigious exhibitions such as the "Salon de Mai" and undertook various initiatives to support Turkish artists in France.

By organizing exhibitions both in Turkey and abroad, Dino adopted a versatile artistic understanding that united different art branches such as painting, sculpture, and film. His art stood out by blending traditional Turkish motifs with modernist approaches. His social sensitivity and political stance brought respect for human life and labor to the forefront in his works; he processed these themes in works such as "Torture Drawings" and "White But Black". Abidin Dino passed away in Paris in 1993, but his legacy continues to live on in collections from Turkey to France and all around the world.

Abidin Dino's life and works reveal his versatility and intellectual depth in the art world. Dino continues to remain an important figure in Turkish art, not only as a painter, but also as an artist who pushed the boundaries of art with his writings, drawings, and film studies.
