VAHHAB AYHAN

VAHHAB AYHAN (1985), eserleri Galeri Soyut arşivinde yer alan sanatçılardandır. Galeri Soyut sitesinde sanatçının 16 eseri ve 3 sergisi kayıtlı (eserlerin tarih aralığı 2024–2026). Vahhab Ayhan was born in 1985 in the Samsat district of Adıyaman. He completed his undergraduate education in 2008 at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Erciyes University, and then pursued his master's degree in the Painting Department of the same university, graduating in 2011. He prepared his master's thesis on "The Examination of Visual and Narrative Relations Between Cinema and Painting Arts."

Moving to Istanbul in 2011 to establish his own studio, the artist continues his professional career as an art director in the cinema sector, alongside his work in painting and photography. Within the scope of his interaction with the literary world, he prepared the cover illustration for the French translation of Bilge Karasu's work "Göçmüş Kediler Bahçesi" in 2023. In 2024, his monograph titled "Genèse–Oluşum," focusing on his recent works and prepared in both Turkish and French, was published by Kontr.

Among Vahhab Ayhan's solo exhibitions are "In Memory of Lucian" held at Adıyaman University in 2011, "Oluşum" (Genèse) held concurrently with the 6th International Mardin Biennial in 2024, "Katmanlar" at Skala Galeri in Istanbul in 2025, and "Katmanlar-2" held at Galeri Soyut Hall A in Ankara in 2026.

The artist has also taken part in numerous group exhibitions and fairs. Among the major events he has participated in are "İtiraf Et Korkuyorsun" (2015), "Evin İçinde-Evin Dışında" (2016), "Kıyamet-Kıyam Et" (2016), "Olumlayan Dünya" (2021), ArtNova 2nd Art Fair (2025), the group exhibition "Hareket Halinde" (2025), and Art Ankara 12th International Contemporary Art Fair (2026).

Katmanlar

Artist Vahhab Ayhan's third solo exhibition, “Katmanlar,” is on view at Galeri Soyut. Ayhan defines his artistic style in terms of content and technique by basing it on the "teşi" technique, which is the process of twisting or knitting yarn made from wood. By developing and transforming this technique with a special method, he turns traditional weaving techniques into a modern interpretation. He states that if he were to define it through an -izm, he could name this technique "Teşizm."

Ayhan creates his works by applying this technique, which requires patience and meticulousness, onto the canvas using fine brushes and delicate, embroidery-floss-like lines. While this method allows for an approach reflecting the production process of traditional weaving products—such as kilims, carpets, and cicims—the artist shapes his paintings as if doing “teşi” in a more abstract and original way with vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and bias lines.

Adopting an approach of “drawing” rather than “painting,” unlike the traditional understanding of painting, Ayhan portrays each line as a cover, a meaning, a thought, a dream, or a layer with a palimpsest approach. Like threads, the lines create depth and meaning by covering previous layers without erasing their traces with each new layer. This process reflects the continuous evolution of life and thought through both visual and intellectual stratification.
