Born in 1955, contemporary artist Çetin Bilgin completed his academic education with a master's degree from Mimar Sinan University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Painting, Neşet Günal Workshop in 1984. Drawing attention with his innovative and inquiring style throughout his career, the artist was awarded at the 5th New Tendencies Open Air Exhibition held at the State Art and Sculpture Museum in 1984, and certified his artistic success by receiving a "Certificate of Honor" at the New Tendencies Exhibition in 1994. Securing a unique and profound place in Turkish contemporary art with his productions, Bilgin is currently represented by Galeri Soyut.
The foundations of the artist's aesthetic vision are based on the multi-layered fictional experiences he gained by working as an actor, set, and costume designer on professional theater stages between 1977 and 1982, prior to his academy years. Carrying his technical repertoire to an international dimension with the printmaking workshop studies he conducted at the Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop & Gallery in Scotland in 1996, Bilgin treats the canvas not just as a superficial form where paint is transferred, but as a dynamic space where memory, space, and thought breathe. In his art, color and form constantly seek their own meaning; fragmented and stacked layers live together in a struggle for existence without destroying one another.
Bilgin's art is positioned at the most extreme points of the figurative and abstraction, in what he calls a "Purgatory" space. The butterfly, one of the most powerful metaphors in his works, has lost its innocence and poetic beauty in nature, transforming into a fragile symbol of humanity's self-created consumption cycle. With an aesthetic reference to the light and grasses of Balthus, the artist examines this fragility not merely as a visual feast, but as an ontological problem. Butterflies are now hybrid entities born from digital codes and cosmic emissions, bearing circuit patterns belonging to information technology and neon effects on their wings.
Referring to Baudrillard's theory of simulation and the process of "apoptosis," which means cellular self-destruction, this conceptual approach questions the boundaries between the artificial and the natural, the industrial and the organic. Stripping away the dead tissue of the past, the artist transfers the digital and cosmic uncertainty of the future to his canvas, leaving the viewer alone with the uncanny questions of post-human existence. Having exhibited his works on many prestigious platforms ranging from Contemporary İstanbul to exhibitions in New York and Washington throughout his career, Çetin Bilgin continues his artistic productions uninterruptedly in his studios in Portugal, İstanbul, and Fethiye Kayaköy.
