Born in Istanbul in 1960, Selma Gürbüz began her artistic journey in 1978 by studying painting, photography, and theater at Exeter College of Art Design in England. Having been introduced to the technical and conceptual approaches of Western art there, the artist returned to Turkey following her education between 1980 and 1982, continuing her academic development in the Department of Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Marmara University. Graduating in 1984, Gürbüz began constructing a rare and original visual language in Turkish contemporary art that synthesized local values with universal forms of expression from the early years of her career.

The artist's production practice possesses a deep stratification that brings together the mystical, mythological, and fairytale elements of Eastern and Western cultures. Particularly in her works executed with ink on handmade paper, a simple yet striking formal language filtered through shadow play, traditional miniature art, and Far Eastern calligraphy can be observed. While constructing humans, nature, animals, and surreal beings on the same plane, Selma Gürbüz takes the viewer on a journey through the timeless corridors of dreams and the subconscious. Each crow, snake, hair, or tree figure in her works emerges as part of a symbolic narrative beyond merely being a visual element.

Having held solo exhibitions in many art centers of the world from Paris to Rome, and London to Barcelona throughout her career, the artist once again drew the attention of the international art public with her works exhibited at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011. Gürbüz's artistic life has been shaped by a search that boldly questions both the compassionate and dark aspects of the relationship between nature and humanity. Using the balance of emptiness and fullness skillfully in the compositions she created, the artist preferred to set her figures free within an endless atmosphere rather than trapping them within a specific space.

The artistic adventure of Selma Gürbüz, who passed away in 2021, reached its most comprehensive inventory with her retrospective exhibition titled "Dünya Diye Bir Yer", which opened at Istanbul Modern shortly before her death. This exhibition revealed as a whole the evolution of the themes and different techniques the artist had been working on for over thirty years. Today, with her works included in the permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as the British Museum, Fondation Maeght, and Ankara Painting and Sculpture Museum, Selma Gürbüz continues to be one of the most inspiring figures of contemporary art with the enchanting world and artistic legacy she created.
