Kuzgun Acar's story is one of the most lyrical yet harsh and tragic pages of Turkish art history. His death in 1976 at the age of only 48, falling from a scaffolding while working on a giant wall relief for the Marmara Hotel in Istanbul, seems like a part of the perpetually dynamic nature of his art; he was always inside the material, upon the scaffolding, right at the heart of form.
One of the most striking anecdotes that makes his artistic story "interesting" is his first-place win at the Paris Biennale in 1961. When he went to Paris with the scholarship he won as part of the award, the art authorities of the period watched in astonishment at how he worked iron like "silk." However, Kuzgun was not merely a studio artist; he was an activist who believed that "sculpture should take to the streets." On one occasion, he gathered rusty irons and wires emerging from fishermen's nets and drew such powerful forms from them that critics wrote he "breathed life" into scrap. In fact, he would collect the materials he used in some of his works directly from shipyards and scrapyards, reshaping them with an aristocratic air.
The artist's saddest and most striking story is the "Türkiye" relief he made for the Ankara Emek İş Hanı. Completed in 1966, this massive work symbolized the pains and dynamism of Turkey's modernization. However, the abstract language of the work could not be understood at the time; saying "what does this depict?," it was dismantled, thrown into a warehouse, and left to rot. Years later, rumors that parts of this work were sold to scrap dealers are the most concrete example of the tragedy of Kuzgun Acar's art being misunderstood in these lands. Yet he was an art soldier who had rejected all the comfortable European life offered to him after his success in Paris, returning to Turkey by saying, "Both my material and my trouble are in these lands.">
Kuzgun Acar was also passionate about theater and the stage. The masks he prepared for Mehmet Ulusoy's play "The Caucasian Chalk Circle" are still taught as exemplary lessons in world theater history today as "sculptures that integrate with the actor's face." For him, sculpture was not just an object to be watched, but a living, moving, and even suffering entity. That unfortunate accident in 1976 took away not only a sculptor from Turkish art, but also a poet who made metal speak. Today, that famous "Birds" sculpture flapping its wings on the wall of the İMÇ blocks is actually the eternal signature of Kuzgun's free and untameable spirit in the skies of Istanbul.
