Orhan Peker was born in Istanbul in 1927. He began his art education at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts, which he entered in 1944, and studied in the Nurullah Berk Workshop. Influenced by the prominent instructors of the period during his education at the Academy, he tended to develop an original painting language. After graduating in 1953, Peker undertook various duties, worked as a freelance painter in Ankara for a while, and also produced works in the field of Graphic Arts.

Referred to as one of the important innovative names of Turkish painting art since the 1950s, the artist took part especially among the painters of the 1950 Generation. Nature depictions, animal figures, and scenes from daily life came to the fore in his works. His unique brushstrokes, color patches, and formal simplicity drew attention as distinctive features in his paintings.

Orhan Peker participated in many group and solo exhibitions in Turkey, and also took part with his works in international exhibitions. The award he received at the Tehran Biennial in 1958 became one of the important turning points in his artistic life. He left a mark with his works not only in the field of painting, but also in graphic arts and illustration studies.

Having a special place in contemporary Turkish painting art with his original approach and innovative attitude he brought to painting throughout his artistic life, Orhan Peker passed away in 1978.
