Can Göknil was born in Ankara in 1945. She studied painting at New York City College and completed her master's degree at the same university. Beginning her artistic career in the 1970s, Göknil has continued her production as both a painter and a writer.

Exploring themes of fairytales, mythology, the states of womanhood, and social memory in her paintings, the artist has developed a figurative expression with a unique style. She has held numerous solo exhibitions in Turkey and abroad; her works have been on view in cities such as New York, Paris, Athens, Milan, Tokyo, and Istanbul. Her works are included in national and international collections.

As a prolific artist in the field of literature as well, Göknil is known for the books and illustrations she has contributed to children's literature. In her narratives, she blends motifs belonging to Turkish culture and traditions with a universal language. In this respect, both her visual and literary productions have made significant contributions enriching cultural memory.

With her interdisciplinary approach, the artist has carved out a distinct place for herself in the worlds of Turkish painting and literature.
