DURAN KARACA

DURAN KARACA (1934), eserleri Galeri Soyut arşivinde yer alan sanatçılardandır. Galeri Soyut sitesinde sanatçının 12 eseri ve 11 sergisi kayıtlı (eserlerin tarih aralığı 1972–2002). Turkish painter Duran Karaca (Adana, 1934 – 2006).

After studying at Tarsus American College, Duran Karaca entered the Ankara Faculty of Law, but due to his passion for painting, which had been with him since childhood, he left his studies there and enrolled in the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts, where he was a student of Halil Dikmen in the gallery and Cemal Tollu in the studio. Upon graduating from the academy, he chose to work as an independent painter. In 1967, he went to Paris on his own for a year, visited museums, and had the opportunity to get closely acquainted with the great painters of the West; meanwhile, he conducted research in cities such as Brussels, Amsterdam, Hamburg, and Copenhagen.

He held his first exhibition together with Lisette Zara in Istanbul in 1962, and organized another solo exhibition in 1968. He presented his first exhibition in Ankara in 1965, consisting of print cards. Starting from 1972, he held all his exhibitions in Ankara at intervals of two to three years. He participated in group exhibitions organized to promote contemporary Turkish painting abroad.

Duran Karaca submitted paintings to the State Exhibitions until 1970, including his work titled Güneydoğulu Kadın. In 1981, he received an honorable mention at the exhibition themed «Atatürk, the War of Independence and Revolutions» organized by the Ministry of Culture. He participated in the exhibition organized by TPAO in Ankara for the 100th anniversary of Atatürk's birth with his painting titled Yurdumun Işığısın. The artist's paintings are held in domestic and foreign collections.

Duran Karaca died in Ankara in 2006.

Duran Karaca's art ranks among the original examples of regional Turkish painting. The cotton workers of the Çukurova region where he was born and raised, and the landscapes of this region, formed a continuous subject for his paintings. In these paintings, where the figure establishes an organic unity with the landscape, a coloring approach is an unchanging feature. The concept of depth is resolved through the light-dark color balance, and the distinction between near and far is not handled with a very sharp change of planes. Such a tendency brings to mind the old masters of art and great traditions. Far Eastern art and post-impressionist Western painting, along with old miniatures, are the main sources of inspiration in Duran Karaca's art. The spirit of diagonal brushstrokes, a color approach based on warm tones directed by the surrounding landscape, and a love for nature and humanity are the main motifs that weave his painting.
