EŞREF ÜREN

EŞREF ÜREN (1897), eserleri Galeri Soyut arşivinde yer alan sanatçılardandır. Galeri Soyut sitesinde sanatçının 4 eseri ve 4 sergisi kayıtlı (eserlerin tarih aralığı 1981–1981). Eşref Üren was born in Nişantaşı, Istanbul in 1897. He completed his primary and secondary education in Istanbul and Bursa. He attended Galatasaray High School for a period. With his family's move to Bursa, he left Galatasaray High School and enrolled in the Bursa School of Agriculture. With the outbreak of World War I, he was conscripted into the military as a Reserve Officer. He was discharged a year later. Following his discharge, he returned to Bursa.

He decided to become a painter in Bursa at the exact moment İbrahim Çallı was painting a landscape of the Green Tomb. He describes this moment as follows: "I was discharged from the First General War as a Mülazim-i Sani (Reserve Officer). I came to Bursa to my mother's side. In those days, I had a fondness for literature. I wasn't writing anything, but I was reading three or four literary magazines. In the late afternoon, when I got bored, there was a promenade in Bursa, I would go there and get some fresh air. One day I went again and saw there was a crowd. A man was sitting and painting. His torn socks were sticking out of his shoes. I got closer. He was sitting facing the Green Tomb and working on a landscape. I looked at the painting; it was more beautiful than the Green Tomb. I decided to become a painter there. I tossed and turned from right to left until morning. I got up in the morning and said to my mother:

-I am going to Istanbul. I said.
-What will you do? She said.
-I am going to the Sanayi-i Nefise. I said.

Not accepted into the Sanayi-i Nefise on the grounds of being too old, Eşref Üren attended as a "Guest Student" from 1919 to 1922. Although he became a student of Hikmet Onat and İbrahim Çallı at the school, he found the education there "monotonous" and left. He took private painting lessons from Feyhaman Duran, İbrahim Çallı, and Muazzez Bey. In 1925, he returned to the Sanayi-i Nefise and enrolled as a regular student. Although his workshop instructor İbrahim Çallı's words "It's not working Eşref, it's not working" saddened him, it also drove him with ambition to work harder. Later on, there were also moments when the same instructor "Honored" him with the words, "Eşref's landscape here is as emotional as Mozart."

In 1928, he went to Paris to improve himself. He worked in the André Lhote Workshop. He had the opportunity to examine and observe the works of the Impressionists and Symbolists at the Paris Museum of Modern Art.

He returned to the homeland in 1929. Between 1930 and 1938, he worked as a painting teacher at the Erzurum and Sivas Teachers' Schools. Upon his return from Paris, where he went again with his wife in 1938, he was appointed to the Ankara Atatürk High School.

He participated in the D Group's exhibition at the State Academy of Fine Arts, became a member of the group, and wrote articles about the group. He participated in the "Homeland Tours" organized by the Community Centers. In 1940, he went to Yozgat, and in 1943 to Ağrı. He participated in exhibitions with the works he created during the Homeland Tours.

He retired from civil service in 1955, but continuing his painting teaching at TED Ankara College and Ankara Atatürk High School from 1956 to 1968, Eşref Üren also continued his writings, which he started in Milliyet Newspaper in 1932, in various publications of the period until 1984.

Eşref Üren clarifies comments regarding his being an Impressionist with the words; "The connection between me and the impressionists is solely in terms of harmony, that is, colors accepting and agreeing with each other. In short, a kinship is assumed. However, this is not enough to make me an 'Impressionist'. The handling of perspective in the air and the sun and light places me somewhere else and brings me closer to myself."

Eşref Üren passed away in 1984, leaving behind hundreds of works.
