Born in Istanbul in 1928, Ara Güler stepped into the world of art and visual culture with a passion for cinema and theater. His entry into journalism in 1950 marked the beginning of one of the most significant testimonies not only in Turkey's history of photography, but in world history of photography. Following his education at the Faculty of Economics of Istanbul University, Güler turned toward a career in professional photojournalism, quickly drawing the attention of international publishing organizations and beginning to work for prestigious magazines such as Time-Life, Paris Match, and Stern. His meeting with Henri Cartier-Bresson in 1953 and his subsequent joining of the legendary Magnum Photos agency stand as one of the most critical turning points that cemented his global impact.

Ara Güler preferred to see himself as a "photojournalist" pursuing the truth rather than defining himself as an "artist." His lens did not merely freeze moments in time; it also recorded the sorrow, joy, and existential struggle of human life. His being referred to as the "Eye of Istanbul" stems from his documenting the dramatic transformation the city underwent beginning in the 1950s, the foggy mornings of the Bosphorus, the deep conversations in coffeehouses, and the stories of ordinary people on the streets with a unique poetry. For Güler, photography was far beyond an aesthetic concern; it was a visual footnote dropped into history, a perspective that elevated him to the position of one of the world's most important visual historians.

Throughout his career, he immortalized not only streets and cities, but also the figures who steered history. The unforgettable portraits of many global icons—from Pablo Picasso to Salvador Dali, Winston Churchill to Alfred Hitchcock, Bertrand Russell to Indira Gandhi—bear his signature. The artist's sharp observation manifested itself not only on human faces, but also in the depths of Anatolia. The ancient city of Aphrodisias (Geyre), which he discovered by chance and introduced to the world, passed into history as one of his most important contributions to the fields of archaeology and cultural heritage.

Ara Güler, who passed away in 2018, left behind a massive archive consisting of millions of frames and an unshakeable cultural heritage. Awarded numerous international honors throughout his life, such as France's Legion d'Honneur and Master of Leica, the master's works are today housed in the world's most prestigious museums and collections. Transmitting his archive to future generations through the museum established in his name, Ara Güler proved that photography is not merely writing with light, but also a mirror held up to human dignity, becoming the most powerful representative of Turkish photographic art on a universal scale.
